UK Food and Drink International Action PlanThis month the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) delivered the Food and Drink International Action Plan which aims to deliver a £500m boost to the UK economy. Over the next couple of years, one of the goals of the plan is to increase the visibility of UK food and drink at the world’s major food events and exhibitions. According to Lord Green, Trade and Investment Minister, “demand for British food and drink products is growing fast”. Over the last 2 years, overseas sales have already increased by 15%. Another key finding of the report is, that 90% of the small and medium sized businesses (SMEs) are currently not exporting or primarily only to their European neighbours, which shows a big area of potential for the industry. According to Fiona Kendrick, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Nestle UK and Ireland and Co-Chair of the Agri-food and drink Export Forum “exporting is key to reach the shared goal with government of 20 percent sector growth by 2020."
