One of the objectives of the German conservatives’ campaign program is to increase the use of German in European institutions.
According to a draft campaign program from Angela Merkel’s conservative party, German is the most widely spoken mother tongue of the EU. It also ranks in the top three working languages. However, for the past few decades, English and French have been the main working languages of the EU.
Nevertheless, there are differences depending on the institution. While German is rarely used on a daily basis at the European Commission, it is frequently used in the European Parliament as its President is German. Moreover, a large amount of its members are German due to the country’s large population.
As a consequence, they call for the language to be treated equally with English and French in the European Parliament, Commission and Council. It was already the case in their 2009 program as they complained about the fact that German was not put on an equal footing.
