Sales of Italian cured meats are growing abroad. Indeed, exports exceeded 138.440 tonnes, increasing by 3.8% in 2012,
and have broken records in terms of value, growing by 7.2% to 1.116 million euros (i.e. £956 million).
Exports outside the EU particularly contributed to this trend
. While Italian cured meats exports increased by only 1.3% in terms of volume and 4.6% in value in the EU, they grew by 12.7% in volume and by 16.5% in value in markets such as the United States, Japan, Canada, Russia and Hong Kong.
Exports to the United States exceeded 5.890 tonnes, a growth of 21.5% in 2012, reaching 68.1 million euros (i.e. £58.5 million) that is to say a 29.7% increase. Last year, in terms of volume, sales in Canada rose by 21.5%, in Russia by 33.9%, and in Hong Kong by 23.1%. Whereas with regards to value, sales in Canada increased by 24%, in Russia by 24%, and in Hong Kong by 20.8%. Brazil appears to be one of the most promising markets with a 17.9% increase in volume and a 23.6% increase in value.
However, Italian cured meats exports didn’t really succeed in the EU due to the economic crisis and the fall in the number of consumers
. Despite the economic climate, the trend remains positive as the 2012 sales soared by 1.3% to 105.900 tonnes, reaching 852.3 million euros (i.e. £732 million).
