About the Korean language
Korean is the native language of around 81 million people, spoken primarily in South Korea and North Korea. Beyond the Korean peninsula, the language is also spoken in parts of China, Russia, the United States and Central Asia by diaspora communities.
Modern Korean is written in Hangul, an alphabet created in the 15th century that is widely praised for its scientific design and accessibility. The language is also shaped by social hierarchy, with a system of speech levels and honorifics that reflect the formality of a situation, making cultural understanding essential in translation.
In recent decades, Korean culture has gained global visibility thanks to exports in music, film and technology, often referred to as the “Korean Wave” (Hallyu). It is also ranked among the most difficult languages for English speakers to master, underscoring the need for professional linguists when accuracy matters.
The importance of Korean for global business
South Korea is a global economic powerhouse. Its economy is the 13th largest in the world and the 4th largest in Asia, valued at over US$1.8 trillion by nominal GDP. South Korea’s rapid economic growth has transformed it into a leader in technology, manufacturing and research.
South Korea is currently the ninth largest exporter and importer worldwide, with thriving industries in electronics, automotive, pharmaceuticals and entertainment.
For businesses looking to access these opportunities, accurate Korean translation and localisation are vital to engaging audiences and meeting regulatory standards.
