About the Slovak language
Slovak is a West Slavic language belonging to the Czech–Slovak group and is written using the Latin alphabet. It forms part of the Indo-European language family and is spoken by around five million people worldwide, primarily in Slovakia.
Slovak is the official language of Slovakia and one of the 24 official languages of the European Union.
Like other Slavic languages, Slovak features a rich grammatical structure, including complex morphology and a relatively flexible word order. Over time, its vocabulary has been influenced by Latin, German and neighbouring Slavic languages, reflecting the region’s historical and cultural development.
In western Slovakia, certain Moravian dialects spoken near the Czech border share characteristics of both Slovak and Czech. These transitional dialects highlight the close historical and linguistic relationship between the two languages and help bridge the gap between them.
