About the Latvian language
Latvian is an East Baltic language within the Indo-European language family. It is spoken primarily in the Baltic region and is the native language of the Latvian people. Latvian is the official language of Latvia and one of the official languages of the European Union.
There are approximately 1.5 million native Latvian speakers in Latvia, with a further 100,000 speakers living abroad.
Latvian is most closely related to Lithuanian, the only other living Baltic language with official status, although the two languages have evolved in different directions over time.
Within the Indo-European language family, Latvian belongs to the Baltic branch and has preserved many features of ancient Proto-Indo-European noun morphology. At the same time, it has undergone significant innovation in pronunciation and verb forms. The language has also been influenced by Livonian, reflecting historical contact between Baltic and Finno-Ugric languages in the region.
