About the Swahili language
Swahili is a Bantu language spoken widely across East Africa, with 150–200 million speakers.
It originated on the East African coast through centuries of interaction between Arab traders and Bantu-speaking communities, which also explains its high proportion of Arabic loanwords (around 40% of the vocabulary). Portuguese, English and German have also left their mark on the language.
Swahili holds a unique position as the lingua franca of East Africa and is an official language of the East African Community, used in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and beyond.
It is also one of the working languages of the African Union and the Southern African Development Community.
For organisations engaging with East African markets or diverse communities in the UK, Swahili is a vital language for building trust and ensuring inclusion.
End-to-end Swahili support
Wolfestone delivers secure, ISO-certified Swahili translation and interpreting for clients across industries including law, healthcare, life sciences, manufacturing, NGOs and market research.
